I think Scott Pilgrim's genre is a coming of age comedy because it's about Scott's personal growth. The video game styling and edits were really funny and made sense because the film essentially had "rounds" of action sequences. It's interesting, however, that these edits were inconsistent throughout the film. There was one scene with the animation from the original comics and that never really came back. Then there was one scene that had laugh tracks like an old-fashioned day time sitcom. The video game edits also keeps the film from being seriously interpreted as it is watched, which is good because it distracts from the plot holes and dropped storylines. I think the edits were important to the integrity of the film, and they were beautifully done. Kudos to Edgar Wright.

Scott Pilgrim is a movie I would place in the satirical romance genre. It makes fun of most cliches in romantic films by using action and comic effects to exaggerate all the occurrences. The actors also act like their comic book counterparts, exaggerating everything to emphasize the dramatization of a simple but rarely told story - a guy overcoming his own self esteem issues to be with a girl he loves. I like the idea of the story, but I think it could have been told in a more elegant manner than by attempting to bring the comic book to life literally. I appreciate that the movie attempted to make everything larger than life, but it removed the believability of the film and made it harder to relate to as well. The special effects were pretty awesome though.

Scott Pilgrim is first and foremost a comedy that ventures into the genres of romance and coming-of-age. Armed with a quirky aesthetic setting that mimics the comic book from which it originated, Scott Pilgrim creates a zesty comedy that shows a desire to make of fun of conventional archetypes that plague the genre, but eventually falls into the same trap itself. The visuals are overwhelming to the point of being satirical, as it exaggerates the ridiculous nature of fighting multiple enemies/exes for a prize/girlfriend. However, the narrative fails to ever address the folly of such egotistical male-centered thinking, and in the end even glorifies it by having all female leads forgive Scott of his sins as he pursues the maniac pixie girl of his literal dreams.

In Scotts Pilgrim vs. the World the movie, I thought they did a really good job of staying true to the original comic book. I definitely felt like I was watching the comic brought to life. The film stayed close to the original plot and artistic elements of the comic. I also noticed they did a really good job of making sure that the characters accurately resembled the comic book characters in both personality and costume. I like that the settings in the movie looked the same as the drawings in the comic. For example when Scott and Ramona are on their first date outside, I felt like the film really captured that same outdoor, cold, night time ambiance that was portrayed in the original comic. My main critique is the way the actor played Scott Pilgrim. I felt the Scott Pilgrim in the film was more awkward than the Scott Pilgrim of the comic.

Everyday the Same Dream was more like an interactive story spliced with simple puzzles in that there were certain actions that needed to be taken in order to progress through the set narrative. It was almost like an escape room type interaction with very few controls and actions. Though the gameplay was explicitly boring and monotonous, I could tell that it was intentional, and effective, in delivering the message. Such guided and limited gameplay/narrative succeeds at telling the story that the creator really intends to, at the expense of overall entertainment. The colors and layout of the game also add to the repetitive, mundane, and dark mood of the game. On the other hand, The Company of Myself, which was a little more involved than Everyday the Same Dream, was more enjoyable as a game -- the gameplay and puzzle solving were more engaging and open-ended/player-oriented. However, it definitely did not have the artistic impact Everyday the Same Dream had.

Scott Pilgrim is a fun and quirky movie that is unique, the style is clearly inspired by the comic from which it was adapted. It makes sense that they would try and incorporate some of the comic book kind of styles and looks to it. I think this genre is an odd blend between a superhero action movie and a romantic comedy. Personally, I am not a fan of the story nor the characters. I don't really like Michael Cera and I don't think he sells the character well.

Scott Pilgrim is an interesting take on the graphic novel adaptation genre, and while it is effective in some ways, its muddied messages and narrative interruptions keep it from being another of Edgar Wright's masterpieces. The interjections of pseudo-comic sequences disrupt the narrative continuity and can sometimes feel out of place, but as I got used to it, it became less of a factor. Much like Wright's other films, Scott Pilgrim delivers some witty satire on romance, but many of its themes of love, race, and self-respect can be problematic when combined with the film's satirical devices. Nonetheless, Scott Pilgrim is an entertaining work and is a rather good adaptation of a graphic novel and succeeds where others fail.

I feel like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a perfect adaptation of the comic. The movie takes all of the essential elements from the comic, streamlines them, and leaves out subplots that would make the movie too bloated. While I did appreciate the extra background the comic gives that enriches the universe and sheds more light on Scott and Kim's past, I felt that the movie cut what was needed to be cut. The style of the comic translates really well to film as well: it some instances there are shot for shot and word for word recreations without detracting or distorting the original style or feel of the comic. The subtitles and asides work really well too; all the director needed to do was replace the captions with special effects that still serve the same narrative function. On top of that, I love both works, so this was a great watch for me!

This is very fun and interesting film I ever watched. The whole development of the story is just like a game, if you want to date with Ramona, you have to keep beating her evil exs. However, at the end of the story, the main character Scott have to choose between two girls, which just like any other love movie. On the other hand, the transition an the composition is totally like comics book. Since I read the comics book, when I saw this film, it just like I read the comics book with motion and sound. The way the speak and the way their behave is totally not a live-action film style, but more like a cartoon style. It is a amazing film with many interesting plots and laughing point, and you couldn’t believe that it actually is a two-hours film.

I would say that this movie is in the genre of comedy with some satire of action movies. It was really fun watching this after having read the comics because the movie follows it almost scene for scene. The comic itself works as a kind of storyboard for the play. I wonder how this would look to someone who had not read the comic however and if it would be too weird and off the wall. I think that the stylistic choices give the impression of a comic book however, with all of the labels and the sound effects. This is an incredibly fresh decision I think and I like that they took that step.

I thought the Scott Pilgrim movie was funny, entertaining and true to the comic book series. From having read some of the comics in the beginning of this decal, I thought it represented the plot authentically to the comic. For example, the scenes were exaggerated with flashy colors similar such as the way it is shown in the comic. With flashes of color, along with lively rock sounds.

Scott Pilgrim is an interesting hybrid of genres. It combines elements of action, comedy, coming-of-age story, and magical realism. It also incorporates elements of video games and music videos. The style is very true to the comics. As with the comics, I really enjoy the side characters while the main characters are significantly less interesting and more stereotypical.

I definitely enjoyed the movie! Scott Pilgrim is refreshingly interesting, quirky and funny. The whole movie seems to be based on a comic book format, and the movie explores the action film genre, comedy and romance film genre. I guess the reason behind the stylistic qualities definitely plays into creating a world over-the-top, different than that of the real world. In my opinion, the overarching purpose of comic books is to entertain and to immerse the reader in a reality where an enhanced level of possibilities is made real. Scott Pilgrim, his rivals, and Ramona all play a part in this narrative in that they all seem to want to escape a reality that they don’t want to live in—for example, the ex-boyfriends don’t want to live the reality that Ramona dumped them or Ramona wants to live in a reality that the boyfriends are fighting for her. Note: I haven’t watched the whole movie, but I feel that I’ve watched a good amount to leave a well-thought out comment.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World is an action, comedy, and romance film. Based upon the comic of the same title, Scott Pilgrim is a narrative story about the protagonist and his romantic endeavors. Thus it’s romance, although the comic style and storytelling is what gives it the action and comedy genre. The inclusion of the original comic, and the creative battles reference how the original comic is drawn and perceived as an action/video game series. It feels very different to see real people with the comic styling as real people are too detailed to fit the simplistic comic style, but the CG gives the battles another entertaining perspective.

Scott Pilgrim seems pretty action-comedy to me, mostly on the comedy side, exploring/parodying something like comic book action/superhero stories. I feel like scene transitions being super abrupt and the over-the-top comic book effects + that everything seems normal and dull and dry except when it isn't create a sense of humorous surrealism that make you feel like you're getting caught up in this weird absurd narrative that you have no business being in. On the narrative, Scott is an asshole.

I found Scott Pilgrim vs. The World to be a really interesting film because it as a blend of multiple genres. I was pleasantly surprised with the way that the filmmakers were able to seamlessly blend elements of comic books, video games, and animation into this live action film. Perhaps it is because I have already read the comic books and had some previous exposure to the slightly outlandish plot, but I found it was easy to accept that all of these contrasting elements melded together. What was really interesting to me was the treatment of action scenes as if they were comic book panels. In multiple cases the screen was split up into multiple panels typical of many action scenes portrayed in comics. Additionally, there are also action lines added onto the screen following the movements of characters and some sounds are written in large letters, such as the telephone ringing and the yells, which are all common characteristics of comic books. There are also elements of video games that are seen in action sequences. When Scott defeated an evil ex they would turn into a pile of coins to collect, like in many video games. Throughout the movie we also see that he earns points for different things and at one point Scott even earns an extra life. For a live action film, I also felt that it did a good job of accurately representing the comics. Of course there were some plot changes made to fit the narrative into a feature-length film, but for the most part I felt that the everything from the characters clothing, to dialogue, to description of people and places, was almost exactly the same as, if not very similar to, the comics.
